A Discussion of Employee Benefits for a Business A Discussion of Employee Benefits for a Business

There are many issues to examine in the discussion of what benefits are the "right ones" for a business. Any choice of employee benefits should be a calculated one, definitely not random.

There are many factors to consider prior to establishing a new plan or modifying an existing one. The employers reasons for implementing a benefits plan are usually different from the perceptions of the employees.

The employer's concerns are usually:

  • will employee moral and productivity increase?
  • what are the cost of the benefits?
  • what are the perceived value of the benefits by the employees?
  • how do my benefits compare to the competition?

The employees' concerns about the benefits are often:

  • do they provide adequate coverage?
  • are they flexible enough?
  • what will it cost?

What are your objectives? A new business will have different goals than one that has been around for years. Make a list of the reasons for having a plan.

The best benefits plan recognizes the goals of the employer and the employees. Although that is not often practical, the employees can have a better appreciation of the plan and it's costs if they have some input.

The Evolution of a Business discusses how a business's benefit needs change with time, success and maturity. An overview of the types of employee benefits will give you an idea of the different benefits that are available. COBRA & HIPAA regulations have a definite affect on employers and employees.
